The Best from Helen Corbitt's Kitchens - A Cookbook You Must Have!

My husband is really understanding of my cookbook habit. It probably has something to do with the #$%@& guitars that hang on our walls. ;) Just kidding, sweetheart!

A couple of weeks ago, we were at our favorite grocery store, Central Market HEB, and as I was waiting in line to check out, GuitarMan and the baby were strolling and looking at the book/magazine rack. He comes over to me, smiling, with "something for the Momma." It was this book.

Now, honestly, I'd never heard of Helen Corbitt by name, but I did know of her by reputation. Have you heard of the famous Neiman Marcus cookies? Well, Helen's your girl! She was a New Yorker who got smart and came to Texas. :) Okay, so I'm a bit biased. Anyway... As the book says, she spent time in Houston, Austin, and finally wound up running the restaurant in Dallas at Neiman Marcus. Mr. Marcus didn't care that they were running the restaurant at a loss! He allowed Helen's insistance on the best ingredients to run the show and the place was packed. The rest is history.

This wonderful book is a collection of recipes from 5 different ventures in Helen's life. What I love about the recipes is that they come from a time before the dependence on processed, pre-packaged foods. The ingredients are simple and wholesome yet produce impressive results. Unlike many cookbooks you will find today, these recipes are tried and true. She staked her reputation on them!

The only down side of having this book is deciding where to start. Cooking, that is... I am sure that I will be diving head first into her recipes, and I will gladly share the results with you. So stay tuned. Better yet, get yourself a copy and enjoy!
